Further afield you will find excellent shopping in the cathedral city of Exeter, and to the south the naval port of Plymouth, where Sir Francis Drake played his infamous game of bowls in the face of the approaching Spanish Armada.

Just over the border the neighbouring county of Cornwall makes a pleasant daytrip, offering long, sandy beaches, rocky coves, quaint fishing villages and rugged cliffs. The celebrated biodomes of the Eden Project are approximately two hours away, and are a definite must-see on any holiday to the Westcountry.
